OpenAI's Undisclosed 2023 Security Breach Raises Concerns

In 2023 OpenAI experienced a security breach that was not disclosed to the FBI, law enforcement, or the public. This information was reported by the New York Times on July 4. The breach, discussed internally in April 2023, did not involve customer or partner information access. Executives considered it a non-threat to national security.

The attacker believed to be a private individual with no foreign government ties, accessed OpenAI's internal messaging systems. They obtained details about the company’s AI technology designs from employee conversations in an online forum. However critical systems housing and building AI remained secure. Code was also not susceptible to the breach.

Former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner raised concerns in a memo to OpenAI's directors. He urged measures to prevent foreign entities from stealing company secrets. Aschenbrenner mentioned the incident in a recent podcast. He claimed his firing was due to leaking information and political reasons. OpenAI representative Liz Bourgeois refuted his allegations. She stated that Aschenbrenner’s dismissal was unrelated to his security concerns.

OpenAI’s head of security Matt Knight reaffirmed the company's commitment to security. He emphasized investments made years before the development of ChatGPT. Recounting the inherent risks of AI development he stressed the need to address them proactively.

The New York Times also disclosed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged copyright infringement. The publication highlighted potential conflicts of interest. In response, OpenAI dismissed the lawsuit as baseless.
