Russia Imposes 6-Year Crypto Mining Ban in 10 Regions
Russia to impose a six-year crypto mining ban in 10 regions starting in 2025
Highlights:
•
Russia bans crypto mining in 10 regions for six years, starting in January 2025.
•
Seasonal mining restrictions will affect three Siberian regions during winter energy peaks.
•
Major mining areas like Irkutsk will face partial shutdowns but avoid full bans.

Russia has banned cryptocurrency mining in 10 regions, starting 2025. The new rule will last for six years, running from January 1, 2025, to March 15, 2031. This move comes as the country faces growing concerns over energy shortages caused by crypto mining.
Blanket Bans Impact Mining Operations
The ban will affect 10 regions, including Dagestan, Ingushetia, and Chechnya. The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, along with the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, are also included. In these areas, both mining pools and individual miners will be forced to halt operations.
This action follows new Russian laws signed earlier in 2024 aimed at controlling energy consumption. By imposing these restrictions, the government hopes to prevent further strain on the national power grid. Mining activities in these regions have been growing rapidly, making this move necessary.
Seasonal Restrictions for Major Mining Regions
While some regions face a complete ban, others will experience seasonal restrictions. Three key Siberian regions—Irkutsk, Buryatia, and Zabaikalsky—will limit mining during the winter months. These seasonal restrictions will affect mining activity during peak energy demand.
However, this approach allows key mining areas like Irkutsk to continue operations without a full shutdown. Although these measures aim to balance energy usage, they still represent a major shift in Russia’s mining landscape.
As Russia tightens its grip on the crypto mining industry, miners will need to prepare for a new reality. Companies like BitRiver, which rely on cheap energy in regions like Irkutsk, may face tough decisions in the coming years. The landscape is changing, and only those who can adapt will survive.
