NY AG Takes Legal Action to Reclaim $2.2M in Crypto Fraud Case

New York Attorney General, Letitia James, has taken legal action to recover over $2 million in stolen cryptocurrency. Scammers tricked victims into thinking they had secured remote jobs. Instead, they lost their crypto to fraudulent schemes disguised as legitimate job opportunities.

Scam Promises Fake Jobs and Easy Money

Scammers reached out to New Yorkers, promising flexible work-from-home positions as product reviewers. Victims were told to set up cryptocurrency accounts and deposit funds. They then reviewed products on fake websites, believing their money was needed only to "legitimize" data.

They were assured they would receive their money back, along with a commission. However, none of the victims received any return. James has frozen the stolen funds with the help of the U.S. Secret Service. She also warns against trusting unsolicited text messages offering jobs or opportunities.

FBI Warns of Similar Scams

This legal action follows an FBI warning about a rise in work-from-home job scams. In similar schemes, scammers convinced victims to make crypto payments to "unlock" more work.

However, the payments went straight to the scammers. James condemned the scam, calling it cruel and unacceptable. She emphasized that scammers targeting people trying to support their families would be held accountable.

This case highlights the importance of being cautious when dealing with unknown sources offering job opportunities. Scammers continue to exploit job seekers, and James’ actions show that these criminals won’t go unpunished.
