Montenegro Finally Approves Do Kwon's Extradition to US

Montenegro has approved Do Kwon’s extradition to the United States. The decision ends a long, complicated process that saw multiple twists. Kwon, the co-founder of Terraform Labs, faced extradition requests from both the US and South Korea. Now, with the approval from Montenegro’s Ministry of Justice, Kwon’s legal journey is nearly over.

A Long and Bumpy Road

The extradition case began in 2023 when the High Court of Podgorica approved Kwon’s transfer. However, the decision was passed to Montenegro's Minister of Justice, Bojan Božović. In May 2024, Kwon’s defense team won an appeal, delaying the extradition. 

This sent the case back to the highest court in Montenegro. In August 2024, the Appellate Court upheld the lower court’s decision to extradite Kwon to South Korea.

Despite this ruling, problems continued. 

In September 2024, the justice minister had to decide which country should receive Kwon. South Korea wanted Kwon, but the US also demanded his extradition. 

What Happens Next?

After weeks of uncertainty, on October 17, 2024, Montenegro approved Kwon’s extradition to the United States. This approval came just one day after Kwon’s legal team appealed. 

The appeal was denied, and the legal battle seemed close to an end.

He now faces charges in US courts. After years of delays and court decisions, Kwon’s fate is almost decided.
