Vitalik Buterin Announces Leadership Changes in Ethereum Foundation

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has shaken up the Ethereum Foundation's leadership. The goal is to refocus on technical expertise and better connect with developers. This change follows a rough year for the Foundation, marked by criticism over spending and leadership.

Refocusing on Decentralization and Developer Support

In a Jan. 18 post on X, Buterin outlined his vision for the future. He plans to better support decentralized application developers. The Ethereum Foundation will prioritize decentralization, privacy, and censorship resistance moving forward.

Buterin emphasized that the Foundation won’t engage in political lobbying or steer the ecosystem's ideology. The focus will remain on empowering developers and maintaining Ethereum’s decentralized nature.

A Challenging Year for the Ethereum Foundation

These leadership changes come after a difficult 2024 for the Foundation. In May 2024, the Ethereum Foundation introduced a conflict of interest policy. This followed controversies over key researchers, like Justin Drake.

The move raised concerns about independence within the Foundation. Drake eventually stepped down in November 2024, apologizing and vowing to avoid similar conflicts in the future.

Meanwhile, Ethereum’s layer-2 network experienced significant growth after the Dencun upgrade in March. Transaction fees dropped, leading to a boom in layer-2 networks.

However, concerns arose that these networks could cannibalize revenue from Ethereum’s base layer. Despite this, by the end of 2024, base-layer revenues rebounded to previous levels.
