Republican Senator to Accept Bitcoin Donations for Campaign

In a significant move reflecting the growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies within the political sphere Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn has announced her reelection campaign will now accept donations through Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin and Litecoin. Payments firm BitPay will facilitate these transactions.

Senator Blackburn's embrace of cryptocurrency donations aligns with a broader trend among politicians. Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee began accepting cryptocurrency donations in May. Trump also previously advocated for all remaining Bitcoin to be mined within the United States.

Further solidifying the Republican Party's stance on digital assets a Republican National Committee panel recently passed a draft of the party platform that includes a pledge to "defend the right to mine Bitcoin." They also aim to protect the self-custody of digital assets, the draft states:

"We will defend the right to mine Bitcoin. We will ensure every American has the right to self-custody of their digital assets and transact free from government surveillance and control,”

Additionally, Congressman Matt Gaetz has introduced a bill proposing that federal income tax payments be allowed in Bitcoin. This further indicates the growing political acceptance of cryptocurrencies.
